All classes are taught 5 different PE strands each year: Athletics, Aquatics, Gymnastics, Games, Outdoor and Adventure. In Scoil an Chrío Ró Naofa Íosa each class receives at least one hour per week of physical education.
By taking part in the Active School Flag programme it has helped us to focus on an improved provision of Physical Education in the school. Teachers use the Primary Schools' Sport Initiate to help when teaching and delivering the different strands. We have standardised the school year so that all classes are taught the same strand at the same time apart from Aquatics which takes place at different times.
For further information on our PE programme, please see our School Policies. This year, as part of the ASF initiative, it was decided by staff to select to complete a whole school evaluation in PE.

The Active School Motto and House Names
We are grateful to all the students who supported the search for the Active School Motto and the school house names. After a wonderful competition, the winning slogan is: 'Fitness is cool, amazing and fun! Sitting on the sofa is where the damage is done.'
The house names are: Hop it, Jump it, Walk it and Run it.
We are busily involved in so many activities in the school and we love to explore physical health and well being.

Our P.E Timetable @ Sacred Heart of Jesus 2018/19
With 35 classrooms in our school and nearly 900 children, time and space is a premium. We have partnered with our Local Huntstown Community centre to use their astro pitch and hall so that our 4th class children can enjoy 1 hour of PE every week. We have asked teachers to make sure they do a 15 minute warm up/cool down in the Atrium so that we meet the required minimum of 1 hour PE every week. We have also timetabled the schools pitch so that every class gets even more time at PE this year.
PSSI Lesson Plans! All teachers have been given copies of the PPSI lesson plans for their class level along with a bank of warm-up and cool-down activities. These lesson plans have been extremely useful throughout the year for all strands. The easy access to the plans displayed in the PE hall has enabled teachers to access the PE curriculum freely. |

PE Equipment
Our Active Schools Committee monitor our PE store room to ensure it is kept tidy. They dispose of damaged and broken equipment. Thanks to the hard work of Ms Higgins, in the store room everything is labeled, kept neat and tidy for all to enjoy. We have purchased lots of new equipment this year to assist class teachers in delivering the aspects of the PE curriculum. The new equipment we have purchased includes: skipping ropes, basketballs, softballs, tennis balls, shuttlecocks, cones, beanbags and hula hoops, parachute, beach balls to name but a few.
Developing our facilities
We have redeveloped our green space to provide a brand new playing pitch. It allows us to host lots of team sports and it ensures that all boys and girls are able to play outdoors. The redevelopment of the pitch has taken several years. And the addition of new goals and white lines has been wonderful. We are also fortunate to have a brand new playground with swings, slides and huts. This is a wonderful resource for all of our boys and girls because it promotes interactivity, inventive play and physical activity. The playground is scheduled for use by boys and girls from across the school. At lunch time, the boys and girls in our Coisceim classrooms are fortunate to explore its many uses. Playing outdoors is an important part of our Active School endeavours. We know that fresh air and movement go hand in hand.
Active Break Times At Sacred Heart!
Our Active Committee members putting the children through their paces. We love that the Active Flag team work hard with boys and girls who previously weren't so fond of team sports have found it to be a most rewarding activity. Plenty of opportunity for everyone to get involved. The children have learned new games and sports, all while having loads of fun!!!
