School Closure Extended to 1st February
Online Learning from 11th January
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The Department of Education and Skills has now indicated that schools will not reopen on Monday, 11th January and will remain closed until Monday, 1st February. Therefore our school will move to online learning for the next three weeks.
Your child's teacher will be in contact with you on the Aladdin Connect platform on Monday, January 11th, and will be in daily contact on the platform to direct children's learning during the period of school closure. Our fantastic team of SNAs are also working closely with teachers to best support pupils with additional needs remotely at this time. Children's work may be submitted online to teachers via the Homework function in Aladdin Connect and parents can contact teachers by replying to messages on the Noticeboard. Please ensure that you have registered for Aladdin Connect. Registration codes will be resent today via text and email if you have not already activated your Aladdin Connect account.
While we regret that we cannot reopen the school at this time, we are confident that our pupils will be well supported through this period of online learning and we very much looking forward to our pupils returning to school when it is safe to do so. Stay safe and take care.
Kind regards,
Kieran Lyons

Thank you to pupils, parents and guardians for your great efforts and your continued engagement with us on the Aladdin Connect platform as we all work together in supporting distance learning. I think that everybody is probably in need of a short break from school work for a few days and I hope that you all enjoy the June bank holiday weekend!
I hope that you and all members of your family are keeping well. Mind yourselves, take care and enjoy the long weekend.

Update 30th April
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we go into the bank holiday weekend I hope that you are all keeping well. This is new territory for us all and you should be proud of the care that you are giving to your family at this time and also for all you are achieving in your 'Home School'. Well done!
Please find attached two final support resources for this week. I attach a short Taking Care of our Family document from CAHMS. I also attach an Emergency Family Plan template prepared by Tusla. This document helps families to plan for the very difficult scenario of the primary care giver in the family becoming unwell. None of us would want to be faced with this scenario, but having thought about it beforehand may help in such a situation.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend ... and a day off Home School on Monday!
Regards,
Kieran Lyons.

Update 30th April
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Further to yesterday's CYPSC Resource Pack please find attached a Parenting Through Covid-19 Resource Pack with many hints and supports that you may find useful to help manage home life at the moment.
I hope that you are enjoying Active Home Week and if you would like to have a video entered in the children’s skill challenge competition for publication on our school website and Twitter account please remember to email your child(ren)'s skills videos to [email protected].
Thank you again for your engagement on Aladdin Connect. The creativity, the content and the engagement on the platform from teachers and parents/guardians is fantastic. Thank you to teachers for their brilliant efforts in this area as we get used to supporting pupils at home. Well done to the pupils for the great school work that they are doing at home - keep it up kids, we're really proud of you! And finally thank you to parents/guardians for engaging with us on this platform, it is not easy running a household and a home school, but you are doing great! Remember we are here to help you and content that is sent home by teachers is to be completed as appropriate for you at home and that, of course, means that all content will not be completed by all children, and that is fine.
Take care everybody and stay safe.
Regards,
Kieran Lyons

Update 29th April
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope that you are all enjoying Active Home Week - I don't know about you, but between Mr. Shelly and Joe Wicks' videos and Ms. Higgins' exercises, I'm worn out! I am really enjoying the exercises and I hope that you are too. Don't give up, keeping going with Active Home Week and make sure you get enough exercise every day during the school closure to benefit both your body and your mind.
As part of Active Home Week the Active Flag Team are running a talent competition for the children to showcase their active skills and talents (e.g. football, hurling, running, basketball, gymnastics, yoga, dance). If you would like to enter the competition please send a short video clip or photo of the children's skill or talent to [email protected]. The winning entries from the Junior and Senior classes will be published (if/when you give permission via Aladdin) on our school website and Twitter account for all to see!
Staying on the topic of looking after ourselves, I attach below an updated CYPSC (Children and Young People's Services Committees) Covid-19 Wellbeing Resources Pack. I emailed an earlier version of this resource pack to you previously and it has now been updated. It is an excellent resource pack that outlines many support services that are available at this difficult time.
Finally I would like to let you know that we are currently reviewing our school's Admissions Policy and have posted the draft policy on our website at http://sacredhearthuntstown.weebly.com/draft-admission-policy.html. If you would like to make any comments or give a view on this draft policy please send an email to [email protected] by 4pm tomorrow evening. Thank you.
I hope you are all keeping well. Take care and mind yourselves.

Update 27th April
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for registering with Aladdin Connect. Feedback about the new system of communication has been very positive and we thank you for your engagement with teachers on the platform. Sincere thanks to teachers also for getting up to speed with the new system so quickly and for the quality and range of activities that are being prepared for pupils. Please remember that the activities are being posted to help and support you, but you are in the best position to know how many of the activities your child(ren) should complete and at what level they should complete them at; it is not necessary for the children to complete all of the activities if you do not wish them to do so.
This week we will launch the enhanced Homework functionality on Connect. Parents/guardians will now be able to reply to homework tasks by typing notes or by attaching photos and/or documents. Teachers will then be able to give feedback to assignments uploaded and/or mark them as completed. As we figure out this new functionality together I ask you to be conscious that each Coiscéim teacher has 6 pupils and each mainstream class teacher has around 25 pupils to reply to individually, so we must all be patient and have reasonable expectations in this area.
You can watch a short video explaining the new Homework functions and how to use them by clicking here.
A parent/guardian user guide explaining the new Homework functions and how to use them can be accessed by clicking here.
Following suggestions from parents/guardians we will now be releasing the homework activities one day in advance to help parents/guardians to organise the activities the evening before they will be completed by the children. Homework for the last 14 days will be visible to parents/guardians in Aladdin Connect.
Please also note that you can access your Aladdin Connect account on an internet browser on phone, tablet, PC or laptop as I know that some parents/guardians find it easier to view and download attachments from an internet browser rather than the app.
You can access Aladdin Connect on an internet browser using your registered email address and password at this address: https://www.aladdin.ie/signin/parent and you can be signed in on both the app and an internet browser at the same time.
Teachers will assign academic tasks to pupils each day and our whole school will also take part in Active Schools Week this week ... except of course it will now be Active Home Week! Our school was awarded an Active School Flag last year and I hope that you will all take part in this year's activities. Mr. Shelly has created a video for each day to put us all through our paces and Ms. M. Higgins has put together a list of activities we can do at home to reach a daily target of 60 minutes of exercise. Mr. Doyle and Mr. Herity have also assisted in preparing the Active Home Week activities and Mr. O'Callaghan will be tweeting activities on our school account (https://twitter.com/sacredheartns) during the week. Thank you to all of these teachers for their efforts. Class teachers will explain the activities further to you and please watch Mr. Shelly's first video (which also includes an explanation of Active Home Week) by clicking here.
I hope that you and your families are all keeping well and thank you again for your engagement on the Aladdin Connect platform.
Kind Regards,
Kieran Lyons

Update 20th April
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Please ensure that you register for Aladdin Connect as all teachers will communicate with pupils and parents/guardians via Connect from today. Connect can be accessed via web browser on a laptop or PC or via the Aladdin Connect app on smart phone or tablet.
One of the main benefits of using Aladdin Connect will be the ability for you to send your children's work to teachers for review via the Homework function. The facility to upload attachments in the Homework function was scheduled to be launched by Aladdin today, however unfortunately they did not get this new development finalised in time.
I have been in contact with Aladdin about this issue and their response was:
“I can confirm that we expect the homework enhancements to be available early this week. This will allow your parents to attach their child's completed homework and send it to their teacher for review. The teacher can then send it back to the child/parent or mark it as complete/correct it. Once this feature is available we also expect to have a video and user guide ready to guide you through the use of Homework.”
When Aladdin have launched this new feature, you will receive a notification to that effect on the Message Board.
In the meantime please communicate with teachers by replying to messages on the Message Board. Please note that when you reply to a message on the Message Board your reply cannot be seen by other parents/guardians in the group.
Previous end-of-year school reports are now accessible in Aladdin Connect and additional functionality will be rolled out during the coming weeks and months.
Please note that the plans of work that teachers are preparing for pupils to complete at home are there to assist and support you. I cannot emphasise enough that you are in the best position to know what content you and your children can complete without causing undue stress and anxiety for pupils and parents/guardians alike at this difficult time. Please alter the content and level of the activities as you see fit and please build in time for movement breaks, well-being breaks and personal skills development.
I hope you all had a lovely Easter and that you and your families are keeping well. I look forward to engaging with you on Aladdin Connect and any queries that you may have can be emailed to [email protected]. Thank you.
Kind Regards,
Kieran Lyons

Update 11th April 2020
Minister for Education Joe McHugh announced yesterday (Friday, 10th April) that schools unfortunately will not be reopening on Monday 20th April. We do not have a revised reopening date as of yet, but we will communicate that to you once we have it.
We will launch the Aladdin Connect app in the school to further support pupils and parents/guardians during the period of the school closure. Please see the video message below from Mr. Lyons expanding on these topics.

Update 10th April 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope that you and your families are all keeping well and I wish you a Happy Easter.
I have uploaded two documents below that may prove to be useful to you.
The first document (COVID related contacts and links) outlines a multitude of support services and support resources that are available to help adults and children through this very difficult period. It is an extensive document and all readers will find something of great use to them in it.
The second document is The Great Isolation Activity Book. This is an activity pack for children that moves away from academics and has many activities that children will enjoy engaging in.
I will issue further updates to you over the coming days should the period of school closure be extended.

Update 2nd April 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope this message finds you and your family well Normally on this day the children would be excited that their Easter holidays are scheduled to begin tomorrow, however I am sure that your children would love to come back to school to see their friends (and even their teachers!) at this time. We have been in contact with you about supporting the children's learning at home (and I will send an additional email on this topic tomorrow), but supporting the children's well-being is equally important during the period of the school closure. I emailed resources in this area to you last week and attach some of them again today. I now also have a Soundcloud link to support the attached relaxation techniques document: https://soundcloud.com/user-719669409/relaxation-techniques-30-03-2020
I also attach an excellent Well-Being Journal that can be used by pupils of all ages. This journal was developed by Fiona Forman, the author of the Weaving Well-Being programme that we use in the school.
All children and families have been impacted by the school closure and a change to routine can have an even greater impact on our cohort of pupils who have autism. Today is World Autism Awareness Day and wearing blue on this day helps to raise awareness of autism. As we are not in school to wear blue today I have dressed our school crest in blue instead! I recommend that when you have time at home you should have a discussion with your children about autism, as we would have had in our classrooms today. Www.asiam.ie and www.autism.ie are two great websites to visit and resources are also available on Twinkl. Autism can affect children in the areas of social communication, social imagination, social interaction and sensory processing. Many of our pupils have autism and are welcomed and valued in the school, as all children are, and it is important that we all understand the areas that children with autism can have difficulties with to ensure that we are understanding, welcoming and inclusive.
I will send another update to you tomorrow and I hope that you and your families are all keeping well at this time.
Kind Regards
Kieran Lyons

Update TWO 27th march 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Please see updated Home Learning Frameworks below to help you and the children next week. Please note that these learning frameworks are a guideline to help you, however they do not need to be stuck to rigidly if you prefer to lead other activities at home with your children at this time. As I mentioned in Tuesday's message (below) it is very important that children use their time at home to exercise and to develop skills and hobbies that may not normally have time for during school term time.
There is a wealth of resources available online to direct children's learning and the issue can often be trying to drill down to find the most useful ones. Rather than overwhelm you with online resources, each class level has directed you to particular websites which may help you. I also refer you to the emails that I sent home earlier today and on the 24th March (both posted on this webpage below the updated home learning frameworks) and the invaluable resources and websites that are contained in them.
Communication with the school should be via our email address, [email protected], at this time and please ensure that you are on our emailing list so that we can keep in regular contact with you during the school closure.
Thank you to school staff for preparing the home learning frameworks, we miss the children and look forward to welcoming them back to school at the appropriate time. We hope that you and all family members are keeping well at this time. Take care.

Kieran Lyons

Update ONE 27th March 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Updated home learning frameworks will be sent home for pupils this afternoon, Friday 27th March.
In addition to the websites that were recommended in my previous post below I now attach a document with a short list of websites and apps that may prove useful to you at home. The document includes a brief description of each website and app.
I also attach excellent resources from the National Educational Psychological Service:
Another extremely worthwhile document that I attach is a Covid-19 Wellbeing for Children Resource developed by the Children and Young People's Services Committee.
Please note that in a communication from Seán Ó Foghlú, Secretary General of the Department of Education, today he asked schools to reiterate to parents:
"the absolute need to practice social and physical distancing, and to minimise physical contact with each other, to help avoid the spread of Covid-19. This should include advice to avoid meeting up and in all circumstances to adhere to HSE guidelines. As part of your school community, parents and guardians should also be urged to support their children to maintain the restrictions on congregating for the safety of all in their community. In order to support you in getting this important public health message across to your school communities information notices (in 17 different languages) are available here: https://www.hse.ie/eng/services/news/newsfeatures/covid19-updates/partner-resources/covid-19-translated-resources/ "
I hope that you and all members of your families are keeping well and a further communication will follow today with the updated Home Learning Frameworks.
Kind Regards,
Kieran Lyons

Update 24th March 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians,
This afternoon Mr. Joe McHugh, Minister for Education, stated that schools will not be reopening on Monday 30th March as originally planned. This news, whilst unfortunate, is understandable as we come to terms with the measures required to combat the spread of the Coronavirus. The health and wellbeing of our school community is our first priority and I hope that each of you and your families are keeping well at this time. We are particularly conscious of parents/guardians who have lost their jobs as a result of the current economic situation. No doubt this would have been a completely unforeseen scenario a few short weeks ago and is very difficult for families to come to terms with. Our thoughts are with you and we hope that the employment situation will improve over the coming weeks and months. We also keep in our thoughts the many families nationally that have been directly affected by this virus.
As parents and guardians now direct the learning of children at home, our school will extend the home learning frameworks that we sent home previously and that are available on this webpage. The extended learning frameworks will be emailed to you and published on this page at the end of this week. A sample of a home timetable for junior, middle and senior pupils is also published below. Leading the children’s learning at home gives a great opportunity for children to develop personal skills such as hobbies, music, art, sport skills and cooking and we recommend that you make time in your children’s day to develop these talents.
Getting exercise is also an extremely important part of the day and we of course recommend that children take movement breaks throughout the day. The children could design their own movement breaks with low intensity and high intensity activity mixed with skill development; there are many examples of such child-centred home workouts on Pinterest. Joe Wicks, The Body Coach, is live streaming child friendly PE lessons on his YouTube channel each day, www.gonoodle.com has a huge amount of activities for children and you may also like to revisit the Active School Videos that Mr. Shelly produced for our 2018 and 2019 Active Schools Weeks; all of these activities are child-friendly and can be done at home. We find ourselves in an unprecedented situation both nationally and internationally. Our hope is that with a sustained and collective response to the threat that Coronavirus presents, we will be able to reopen our school at the appropriate time and very much look forward to welcoming pupils, parents and staff back on what will be a very joyful day. Until then we will stay in contact with you, we are contactable by email at [email protected] and we hope that you, your children and all members of your family stay fit and well. Take care and God bless.
