TERM 1 September - December 2019
We are all connected.
Third class students together with their teacher Ms Concannon, have been getting to know one another after the long summer break. With some new faces and a new teacher, it is always great to re-familiarize ourselves with the people with whom we share so much of our lives. What we learn through our games, work and conversations is a universal truth: we are all one. One community, one world and one family. We celebrate the things that make us unique and value the binds and ties that keep us together. As our motto says: Ní Neart go chur le chéile.

Term 2 January - June 2019
First class students worked on an experiment to discover the number of seeds found in different fruits. They then used fruits to create some beautiful artwork. We love their creations.
Why not marvel at the amazing creativity of our fifth class students who, together with their teacher Ms Kennedy, produced these stunning famine villages. The 'Gorta Mór' or Great Hunger, devastated Ireland from 1845, when the potato crop failed. Abject poverty drove thousands of people to the workhouse and saw many people leave Ireland for America, England and Australia. We remember this period in Irish history with great sadness. A stark reminder to us all to help those in need and show kindness to our brothers and sisters wherever they may suffer.
We love the beautiful airplanes that sixth class designed and built with their teacher Mr Herity. They have been exploring aerodynamics as part of their Science lessons. Well done to all involved.
Term 1 September - December 2018
Term 3 April - June 2018
Children in fifth class have been working with Lego WeDo 2.0 to create this impressive robot called 'Milo'. He can be programmed to move using an IPad. Well done to all involved. This project is part of our school's effort to promote STEM education and the idea of integrating subjects together. Critical thinking has always been an essential part of the activities in which we engage here in Huntstown. It prepares our students for a world that is fast paced and ever changing. We will continue to explore technology within the classroom, finding new and innovative ways to enable our students to be the change makers of the future.
Term 2: January - March 2018
Pancake Tuesday in First Class
Ms Concannon was busy flipping pancakes with her first class students on Shrove Tuesday last. Together they prepared the batter with eggs, milk, flour and butter. They carefully poured the batter on to the hot plate, ensuring that the pancakes were flat and even. Once flipped, the pancakes made it to awaiting plates where they were generously attended to with tasty treats such as sugar, lemon, marshmallows and chocolate. Eager eyes were transfixed on the sweet delights. They happily did not last long and were savoured with relish by everyone in the class. All of the other first classes were invited to visit the classroom and were delighted to share in the joy of this important day.
Picasso - Rang 4
Picasso was a Spanish painter who until his death in 1973, led the cubist movement; an artistic style that turned on its head the conventions of painting. Faces are irregular and unusual and it often appears as though the artist has been haphazard with his/her painting. Ms Fagan and her fourth class worked on these impressive pieces of work over the past few weeks. We are all hugely impressed by the quality of what they have produced.

Mr Thynne's fifth class children were busy designing and making circuits recently. They decided to create a door alarm for their room. When the door is opened, a buzzer alerts the occupants to the arrival of the visitor. It is ingenious and is testament to their creativity and dynamism. Well done to you all for your work in STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
Term 1: September - December 2017
These incredible snowmen were created by Mrs. Dooley's second class. They look beautiful and very effective. They used socks for the bodies and decorated them with buttons, ribbons and markers. The elf holding the scissors is keeping a close eye on proceedings. He, like us all, is hugely impressed by the standard of creativity in Rang 2. Well done everyone.

Mr Herity - Rang 6
Ms Mullany - Senior Infants
Senior Infants were asked to design a raincoat for a bear. Their creations are impressive while also functional. Well done.
We looked at the properties of different materials and asked questions about the strength, durability and quality of plastic, bubble wrap and paper. We then tested our materials to see if they would keep water away from Teddy's fur because he hates getting wet. We discovered that the black plastic was very useful. It helped to keep the water away and ensured that Teddy was dry and warm in the rain. We then added colourful designs and decorations to enhance the jackets. We think that Teddy looks very impressive now.

They composed 'Cinquiane Poems' which are featured on the blossoms. The accompanying clouds feature the poetic terms and terminology they explored in class such as metric rhythm and rhyme. Well done everyone.
Senior Infants - Ms Mullany
Lent is a time for reflection and renewal. The boys and girls in senior infants have been thinking about ways they might try to improve and be kinder to those around them every day. They discussed the things that they could do at home and at school to make everyone happier. They then made these wonderful trees with Lenten intentions as the leaves. Everybody can work harder to treat people with kindness and love and we are reminded during Lent that there is always an opportunity to turn over a new leaf and start again. Well done everyone.
Rang 5 - Mr Stapleton
Edvin in Mr Stapleton's fifth class created this incredible tank with help from his Dad. He used wood to form the base and secured the various parts with screws. He then painted the entire structure before presenting it to the class. It is a very fine piece of work and it is great that he shared it with everyone in the class and school.

Inspired by the colours of Autumn, Ms Kirby's third class used leaves to create these incredible pieces of art. They decorated them in the yellows, reds and dark colours of Autumn. They look beautiful in the fading sunlight.
Living Things - Science in the Classroom
Well done to the boys and girls in Mrs Dooley's second class who recently conducted some fascinating experiments on the response of plants to light (phototropism). The students planted seeds in plastic cups and placed some of the cups in direct sunlight and some cups in a dark place. They predicted what might happen and were fascinated to discover the health of the plants in sunshine. The plants growing in darkness (seen here on the left) were not so healthy. It might be a lesson to us all that sunshine is very important in helping to make things grow. If you want to be healthy, you too should go outside in the sunshine whenever you are able.
Well done everyone.

Here are some beautiful images from around the school. Ms Barry's third class enjoyed reading 'Windy Nights' by Robert Louis Stevenson. They responded to the poem by producing these incredible pieces of art. The use of colour and shadow is very impressive.
In second class, Ms Daly hatched chickens and ducks. There was great excitement as the students waited patiently to see a sign of movement from the eggs. Thankfully some beautiful chicks 'broke free' from their shell and are now happily living on a farm. It was wonderful to learn about the cycle of life. The students were delighted to share their excitement with others in the school. Children from other classes happily visited to view the chicks. Well done everyone for bringing new life and great joy to our school.

Poetry Corner - Mr Lyons (Rang 6)
The sixth class children read the book 'I am David' about a young boy who escapes the horror of the concentration camps. In response to their reading, Mellanie was inspired to write this fantastic poem. People who have read the novel will recognise immediately the story of the young David and his epic journey from camp to freedom. It is a wonderful piece of work. Well done.
St Brigid's Day 2015
St Brigid's day 2015 was celebrated during the recent visit by our Diocesan support team. The children learned about the tradition of gathering rushes and fashioning them into Christian symbols. Children from across the school were involved in making crosses this year. Our pictures show crosses made by fifth class children from Mr. Byrne's class and fourth class children from Mr Herity's class. There are two main types of crosses. The first method highlighted here involves weaving twenty one rushes together. It is a style associated with the West of Ireland and crosses like these are common to Clare and Galway. The second, more widely recognised method involves weaving the rushes around a central point. Both styles are beautiful and are an important symbol of our Christian traditions.
Building Volcanoes - Mr Shelly (Rang 6)
An amazing flying machine (Adam in Ms Gillan's class)
Term 3: May - June 2014
