Active Home Week 2020
This year we are taking part in Active Home Week, which is running from 27th April to 1st March 2020. We are pulling together as a community like never before and we are delighted to be taking part in this years Active Flag event. This year there is a challenge chart for the children to fill out with all the exercises that they have done throughout the week. The children will be asked to do 60 minutes exercise a day for five days and have lots of fun while doing it!!
Below you can see three attachments to help both parents and children with ideas for activities and challenges that they can do at home. There is a letter to parents explaining this years Active Home Week and a Challenge chart for the children to fill out.

Active School Week 2019
Tug o'war
The playing pitch was transformed into a Colosseum for the modern age, with boys, girls and adults pulling hard on the tug o'war rope in an ardent attempt to win the tug o'war. We never really understand our competitiveness until something like the tug o'war is introduced. It was all in the name of fun though and even those teams that found themselves hurled ferociously into the grass, returned to their classrooms happy and uplifted, exhausted yet energised. What a wonderful week of active fun.
Teachers Vs 6th Class Children Competition
Teachers under pressure!! The wonderful 6th class children managed to win the inaugural Teacher Vs 6th Class Tug o' War competition. It was a glorious day outside and the whole school came out to look at the competition. Well done children and hard luck teachers, better luck next year!!!
Playground exercises
Every day at 10.55 and again at 12.55 the boys and girls got active at the end of play time. Guided by the Active Flag committee members, they jogged around the playground, performed squats, plank exercises, jumping jacks and a whole range of other movements. Together nearly 900 of us moved with vim and vigour and showed that community spirit and support for one another is strong in Huntstown. We returned to the classrooms each day, delighted at what we had achieved.
Yoga and Dance in the classroom
At 9 o'clock each morning, the boys and girls were involved in 'wake up shake up'. It was a chance to get our bodies moving and our minds alert. For some classes this meant yoga while for others it meant dance and movement in our classrooms. Wherever we found ourselves, we all stopped what we were doing and started to move. The second classes really enjoyed the guided yoga and reported to their teachers how awake they felt afterwards. Sixth classes were delighted to have their blood flowing and their hearts pumping before they had even opened a text or handled a pen each morning. We are starting habits that should serve us well in the future.
Hoola Hoop-Hulathon!
How many ways can you move with a hoola hoop? Well our boys and girls certainly did all they could to find out the answer to this question. From the traditional swish of hips to the more unconventional arm and ankle swings, we were left amazed by their efforts. Guided by their teachers, boys and girls from across the school came to the atrium throughout the week to move with the hoops. They really enjoyed the experience and were equally exhausted and overjoyed by the end of their experience in the atrium.
The Bodycoach @ Midday everyday!!
At 12pm everyday, we had a whole school activity with Joe Wicks 'The bodycoach' . All the children in the school were put through their paces by Joe and his team everyday. The children dropped everything and started to work out in their classrooms. it was a huge success and the children really enjoyed it everyday.
10@10
Another whole school activity that the children to take part in every day was 10@10. Ten minutes of exercises to get the heart rate going and work up an appetite for Lón beag. Well done everyone for inspiring healthy living in us all. Coiscéim a dó having the time of their times during Active Schools Week 2019. All the children from na Coiscéimenna fully participated in every aspect of the weeks exercises and fun!
Walking Trail 2019!
Our Junior and Coiscéim classes were invited to take part in a Walking Trail around the school this year. There were 5 stations with different exercises to be completed at each stop (Running, Jumping, Leaping, Galloping, Jogging on the spot). The trail was so successful and the weather so glorious that our senior classes took advantage of the fine weather and did the trail.
Jersey Day FUN Run @ Sacred Heart NS
On the final day of Active Schools week 2019, The Active Committee organised for the children to wear the jersey of their favourite team. It was a great success and to mark the last day, we organised a whole school activity, were all the children from the school took part in a 1km fun run around the senior yard. All teaching staff took part and really enjoyed themselves. It was amazing to see staff and children working out together. A massive thank you to all teachers but especially to Mr Lyons and Mr Harty for making this event happen.
Active School Week Resource Pack!
Each Teacher was given a Active Schools week resource pack to help them navigate through the weeks activities. Big thank you to the Active Committee for organising this pack. Points were recorded for our House Teams and it was great to see the children work really hard to try and get to the top of the leader board. |
Active Schools Week Art Competition 2019
There was some amazing artists drawings during Active Schools Week. The Active School Committee chose the winner and a big thank you to all who took part. It was so difficult to chose a winner because the standard was so high. Congratulations to both of our winners and well done to everybody involved. What a super effort!!

Active Homework 2019 Monday 8th April
To kick off our Active Schools Week active homework, the Active Schools Flag Committee planned, directed, edited and designed a fitness programme for the children to do for homework this week together with the ASF coordinator Mr Shelly. This was hugely popular last year during Active Schools Week and it was even more popular this year. The children planned the exercises that were to go into the HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) session and all family members got involved. We posted the videos daily on our school website and on the schools twitter account. Well done to everyone involved!

ACTIVE SCHOOLS WEEK 2018
ACTIVE SCHOOLS WEEK 2018!!
Last year was the first time we did Active Schools Week. We had a busy week and achieved so much throughout the week. It was a really enjoyable week and the children benefited from all the activities. We shared the week with Music week 2018 and everyone had a ball!! At part of our active homework, the children planned, designed, edited four HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) sessions to do at home. It was a lot of fun making these videos and something the children should be really proud of. The video was posted on the school website and a text message was sent home so that the whole family could get involved. We had over 1200 hits on our school website when this video was launched, which was just amazing. Well done to everyone involved in Active Schools Week 2018!!!!!!
