A brief introduction to the school
Established initially as a two teacher junior school, Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa Íosa has served the parish of Huntstown since 1982. In that time it has seen some extraordinary changes. With a student body in excess of 850 and a teaching staff of nearly 50, we are one of the largest primary schools in the country. The original building has been extensively redesigned and redeveloped. Between 2004 and 2006 we moved into our newly extended building with its impressive central Atrium and bright and inviting classrooms. In 2011 Dr. Leo Varadkar, Minister for Transport officially opened the first of two classes which cater for children with Autism, Coiscéim 1 which accepted its first enrolments in 2011. In 2012 Coiscéim 2 accepted children and was officially opened by Minister for Social Welfare Ms. Joan Burton and Professor Paul Reville former Secretary of State for Education in Massachusetts in April 2015. We opened a third unit in 2017 and added resource rooms in 2018. |
Children from over forty nationalities are represented in the school and we are very proud of the rich multicultural tradition we have established here in Huntstown. Most recently the school has been awarded Yellow Flag status in recognition of the inclusive nature of the school and the work done to celebrate diversity. The school has a wealth of sporting talent with football, hurling, soccer, athletics and basketball teams representing the school at a local and national level. For several years we have taken part in the National Children's choir and have produced four full scale school musicals in the local Draíocht theatre. A Green flag school, we work hard to build a sustainable environment for everyone to enjoy. We are committed to water and energy conservation and regularly organise litter picking and recycling initiatives. The school has 860 children, 50 teachers, 12 special needs assistants a full time secretary and caretaker. Recently the school developed a playing field and a playground for the children.
