Physical Activity is the promotion and engagement of exercise and movement in addition to the 60 minute per week timetabled curriculum subject of Physical Education.
Scoil an Chrío Ró Naofa Íosa actively promotes the message that children require 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. In Scoil an Chrío Ró Naofa Íosa we have been extremely busy as we have engaged in a wide variety of different programmes, ideas and initiatives which have inspired the children to become more active.
Scoil an Chrío Ró Naofa Íosa promotes the full range of fundamental movement skills during break times and pupils are encouraged to run, play and to 'talk as you walk'. We have two daily playground breaks and our school yard is zoned and marked to allow children to engage in a variety of different activities. Our school has playground leaders who set up activities and sports equipment during break times for others to use.
All pupils engage in an extended classroom based physical activity break on wet days and short physical activity breaks during the day (Go Noodle, 10@10, Wake up! Shake Up! or Just Dance etc.).
Our school has agreed an Active School Flag slogan, which is:
“Fitness is cool, amazing and fun!
Sitting on the sofa is where the damage is done”
Finally, all classes participated in various physical activities throughout the year, such as Active Breaks, Active Lines, Running around Europe 1 KM challenge and of course the very popular non-competitive skipping initiative called ‘Climb the Heights' skipping challenge that lasted a number of weeks, to name but a few!

'Climb the Heights' challenge!
Skipping is a fun and efficient way of building physical strength. The Active Flag committee members set up a 'Climb the Heights Challenge' for us all. Everyone was encouraged to take up their skipping rope and record the number of 'skips' they completed each day. These were recorded and when collated amounted to several kilometers which equates to climbing some of the highest mountains in the world. If collectively we can scale such dizzying heights, then there really is nothing stopping us from achieving great things. Our image shows fifth class boys and girls using the sun filled atrium to skip to their heart's content.
ACTIVE BREAK EVERY DAY Challenge!
On Monday 26th November we started a four week active breaks challenge in our school. It was a fantastic four weeks and the children completed so many activities from 'walk as you talk' to 'Run stop run' to 'run around Europe' challenge. The sight of 850+ children being active during break times was an amazing sight. Well done everybody and especially to our wonderful staff who helped out every day.
A mile a day, keeps the doctor away!! Well it was a kilometer a day but who's counting!! Well done to the whole school from Junior infants to Coiscéim for taking part in our kilometer a day challenge. We managed to run around Europe on a daily basis visiting capital cities like Madrid, Valletta and even Moscow. |
Active Sports Club! Children from 3rd-6th class enjoying the parachute at our after school Sports club in the hall for one hour on a Thursday and Friday. Great chance for children from different classes and year groups to make friends and get fit and active at the same time. Organised by Ms Quinn and Mr Shelly for the children to enjoy! |
Run Around Europe challenge!
The 'Run around Europe' challenge was a great success in our school this year. We ran this initiative for four weeks before Easter and the children were asked to run a 1km a day. The Active Committee lined out 200 meters in our Senior yard everyday in the mornings and afternoons for teachers to bring out their classes and the children to do 5 laps of the playground. The children were able to win house points for their house teams (Hop it! Jump it! Run it! Walk it!). Well done everyone for such a huge effort.
Wake up! Shake Up! Every morning the children were encouraged to take part in Wake up! Shake up! This short exercise videos were carried out in class and it gets the blood flowing first thing in the morning and helps get the children focused for the days work ahead. On wet days the children were encouraged to do a Let's Dance, 10@10 or wake up! Shake up! activities in their classrooms. |

Well Done Team HUNTSTOWN!! |
Active Lines @ Break Times
Our ASF committee showed everyone how its done during our Active Lines at the end of each break. The children loved doing the variety of exercises and all the hard work and training paid off and the children of Huntstown were the real winners. Every break had new challenges for the children and with the help of our trained ASF committee, the children carried out each exercise perfectly. Well done to everyone involved. |
Lunch time blitz
As well as hosting other schools in our newly developed football pitch and playing surface, our senior classes enjoy lunch time football, hurling and soccer blitzes. Assigned to teams based on counties, countries and colours, our boys and girls are fortunate to enjoy playing team sports together in a fun and supportive environment. Using our lunch breaks for team sports is a great way of developing interpersonal skills too. |
