The children on the Green Team have been working hard over the last 12 months in the hope of earning our school its fifth green flag.
This time round, the theme is ‘Biodiversity’. Biodiversity is the variety of living organisms on earth and all of the different habitats where they live. Biodiversity is very important to us and therefore it is important that we do what we can to protect it.
Earlier in the year, the Green Team examined and identified the trees and plants on the school grounds. They also carried out ‘leaf identification surveys’ among students and are now visiting classes to teach the children about some common native trees on our school grounds such as the oak, ash and holly.
The children have also built a ‘mini-beast hotel’. Mr.Kestell built the outer structure of the hotel using old wooden pallets. Then the Green Team set off on a ‘materials hunt’ on the school grounds. They gathered up sticks, stones, leaves, grass, pine needles and cones and used these items to ‘furnish’ the hotel. The result is an inviting home for the many mini-beasts on our school grounds!
Most recently we launched our ‘Biodiversity Code’ to remind everyone how important biodiversity is to us all at Scoil An Chroí Ró Naofa Íosa. We ran a competition asking students to create a ‘slogan’ and/or design a ‘logo’ to represent biodiversity. Esther Kabouet in Mr. Costello’s class was the creator of our winning slogan : “Biodiversity is cool so let’s protect it at Sacred Heart School!”. The winning biodiversity logo was created by Sharon Okanume in Ms. Herity’s class. Both the winning slogan and logo are featured on our biodiversity code posters which are displayed throughout the school.
Next up will be our ‘Biodiversity Action Day’ in May....more details to follow!
